North American Police Equestrian Championships Top Horse

The very first Police Equestrian Competition was held in 1983, and has since grown into a large yearly event known as the North American Police Equestrian Championships. Law enforcement officers (sheriffs, deputies, rangers, correction officers, secret service agents, marshals) and civilians who perform mounted duties for a law enforcement agency partake in this fun and challenging two-day competition! The 2012 Championship was held in Montgomery County, Maryland and was co-hosted by the Maryland National Capital Park Police and the United States Park Police Units.

Every year, the competition includes multiple classes: Equitation, Uniform, Western Division and the crowd favorite, Obstacle Course. The focus of the Equitation classes is on the rider's horsemanship. Teams are judged on their riding performance, form and appearance. In the Uniform class, the Police Officer typically wears their dress uniform, and is judged their appearance, as well as their horse's tack and appearance. The Western Division class is similar to a Western pleasure class, as it evaluates a horse's ride, as the horse should appear to be a "pleasure" to ride with smooth and relaxed gaits.

Police horses encounter many types of obstacles both during their training and during their daily work. The Obstacle Course portion of the competition offers up a challenge for each horse and rider to conquer! Each pair is judged on how well they complete each obstacle, all while staying in the allotted time. The 2012 North American Police Equestrian Championships Top Horse winner was Trooper, a 9-year-old Percheron/Hackney cross gelding, ridden by Constable Gregg John of the Toronto Mounted Police Department, Toronto, Canada.
