In order to make braiding easier on show day, the horse's mane and tail should be kept clean, tangle-free and of the appropriate length. Mane and tail combs or brushes are used to keep the mane and tail silky smooth after shampooing or use of coat sheens. To keep the mane more manageable for braiding, the mane is usually pulled using a pulling comb to thin it out but a thinning comb can also be used if mane pulling is not desirable.
