How to Fit Horse Fly Masks with Ears
There are numerous reasons owners choose to use horse fly masks with ears and horse fly veils. While insect control is available in numerous forms, horse fly masks can be used to protect your horse’s ears, eyes and face from insects as well as from dust. This guide is designed to help you choose and then properly fit horse fly masks with ears, a horse fly mask with eyes and/or horse fly veils.
A horse fly mask with eyes can keep dust and/or flies from aggravating your horse during turnout or while he, or she is stalled. Furthermore, fly masks with eyes provide UV protection to your horse’s sensitive skin and eyes.
These masks are available in a standard length as well as a long length. The long length is designed to cover the top portion of the face because it is vulnerable to the sun. These masks are available in a variety of colors and are typically made of a material like mesh or Lycra.
Horse fly veils are designed to protect your horse’s eyes and ears from flies during riding or while showing. These veils have ears and are generally constructed with a cotton crochet material. Just like horse fly masks with ears and horse fly masks with eyes, horse fly veils are available in a variety of styles at HorseLoverZ.com.
Before You Get Started
The measurements you will need to fit your horse's mask for veil depend on the type of fly mask you are purchasing; therefore, we will address all necessary measurements.
To measure your horse, you will need:
- A tape measure
- A way to document the measurements you take (paper and pen or a smartphone)
Step One – Measure Your Horse’s Forehead
Measure from the outer corner of the left eye to the outer corner of the right eye. Do not take this measurement by actually moving over your horse’s eyes, this measurement needs to be taken from above one eye across the forehead to the other eye.
Step Two – Measure Your Horse’s Head Length
For this measurement, start in between your horse’s ears (poll) and then straight down his or her nose to the top lip.
You also need to measure from your horse’s poll down the center of the face to his or her mid-nostril area.
Step Three – Measure Around Your Horse’s Face and Jaw
From the left side of your horse’s face (at the jaw) move across the top to the right side of his or her jaw.
Step Four – Measure Each Side of Your Horse’s Neck
Begin measuring at approximately 2 inches behind your horse’s ear: Measure from this point to your horse’s outer jaw. Do this on each side of his or her neck.
Step Five – Select a Horse Fly Mask or a Horse Veil
Once you have your measurements, you can use them to choose a horse fly mask with ears, horse fly mask with eyes and/or a horse fly veil.
