D.E. HoofTaps, just one of the great products from our large selection here at HorseLoverZ.
D.E. HoofTaps are a new tool used for excessive wear, hooves that tend to break up, wall separation, traction and other corrective issues.
The HoofTap is a small metal insert, resembling the toe grab found in an aluminum racing plate. This insert is installed by the farrier in strategic places, after regular trimming. This insert (HoofTap) has 3 barbed metal posts to drive into the hoof wall in the same area where horse nails are usually driven. The HoofTaps can be placed where cracks have occurred or where excessive wear has occurred. They are to be driven in with a farriers hammer so they are flush with the hoof. They remain there throughout the whole trimming cycle and eventually trimmed out when the hoof needs to be trimmed again.
The HoofTaps reinforce the hoof wall so excessive wear and tear doesnt happen. Cracked or damaged hoof walls are given a chance to grow out undamaged. These taps are not a horse owner do it yourself item. They are installed by a farrier after trimming with an easy to learn technique. Simply cut a small groove wear the tap needs to go. Hold the tap in place, just outside the white line, and lightly hammer each end of the tap alternating until it is flush.
HoofTaps are a way to keep better hooves on barefoot horses without the expense of shoeing. They are not meant to be a replacement for horseshoes but an aid to keep better hooves on horses that would not normally be shod.
